Of the Hebrews (A.D. 50)

Painter and poet, runner and discus thrower,

Janthis, son of Antony, handsome as Endymion.

From a family friendly to the synagogue.

"My proudest days are those

when I leave off the aesthetic quest,

when I abandon the beautiful, hard hellenism,

with its sovereign absorption

in perfectly wrought and perishable white limbs.

And I become the one I would always

want to remain: of the Hebrews,

of the holy Hebrews, the son."

His declaration was most ardent. "Always

to remain of the Hebrews, of the holy Hebrews.-"

But he did not stay such a man at all.

The Hedonism and the Arts of Alexandria

kept him their devoted child.
